Kaliati hails SLGs

By Mercy Chaluma

Minister of Gender and Social Welfare Honourable Patricia Kaliati has called on beneficiaries of social protection programs to join Savings and Loan groups SLGs for cash plus interventions to their income.

The minister was speaking at Phereni primary school in T/A Njewa, Lilongwe where she toured COMSIP displays before the commencement of an event lined up for social protection week

Kaliati said it is through cash plus interventions that beneficiaries are achieving more than what their monthly transfers can do, which is a clear indication that SLGs are the way to go if they are to get out of poverty.

.Honourable Kaliati has since commended COMSIP Cooperative Union Limited for the work it is doing in instilling the savings and investment culture among social protection beneficiaries

She cited an example of a COMSIP member from Tikondane group in TA Njewa, who started her business with a capital of 10, 000 but has grown her capital to 60,000 through knowledge in business management and financial literacy, obtained from COMSIP through an SLG

In his remarks the Chairperson of the Lilongwe District Council Dan Mtalimanja, while hailing COMSIP for uplifting social protection beneficiaries’ livelihoods, asked the organisation to reach  more beneficiaries so that they too can achieve sustainable livelihoods.

COMSIP Cooperative Limited implements livelihoods components of World Bank Social Protection Programs and currently it has over 55,000 beneficiaries mobilised into groups under the Social Support for Resilient Livelihoods Project, SSRLP.
