Council Hails Impact of Urban Livelihoods Programme

By Mercy Chaluma

The Lilongwe City Council has expressed appreciation to COMSIP Cooperative Union for implementing the Livelihoods Support Programme under the Social Support for Resilient Livelihoods Project - SSRLP, noting that the initiative is transforming lives in urban communities.

Speaking during a recent monthly review meeting held at the Chamber Hall, Civic Offices, the Council’s Deputy Director of Economic Planning, Gift Kasamira, said the programme has brought meaningful change to many households.

“Many people’s lives and livelihoods have improved through this programme. Urban communities are often sidelined in social development initiatives, so this intervention is very important in supporting vulnerable households in the city,” said Kasamira.

The meeting brought together the COMSIP office team, the project desk officer at the council, the COMSIP city coordinator, council extension workers, and COMSIP Case Workers to review the progress of urban livelihood interventions.

Participants discussed progress in savings and loan groups’ activities, cluster savings, and livelihood interventions such as, Value Addition and Joint Skills Groups, while also reflecting on some implementation challenges.

COMSIP Central Project Coordinator Anne Nyirenda thanked the Council for the continued collaboration and reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to addressing the challenges raised.

“We appreciate the Council’s continued collaboration and the dedication of city extension workers who continue to avail themselves to support implementation of the project,” she said.

Similar review meetings have also been conducted in councils across the country as part of efforts to strengthen implementation of the programme.
