World Bank Urges Nutrition‑Linked Livelihoods

By Mercy Chaluma

The Senior Social Protection Specialist and Task Team Leader at the World Bank – Malawi, Chipo Msowoya, has stressed the need to integrate nutrition‑sensitive interventions into economic‑inclusion and livelihood‑investment programmes.

Msowoya was speaking during a field visit to COMSIP clusters participating in the Social Protection Nutrition‑Smart Pilot in Rumphi district.

While applauding the pilot’s progress in Rumphi, he emphasized that integrating nutrition is essential to make a real difference, because data show that the populations targeted by social‑protection and job‑creation initiatives are facing severe nutrition challenges.

“The field visit demonstrated the power of a livelihoods approach that seamlessly integrates nutrition‑sensitive elements to support the poor and vulnerable,” he said.

The pilot project aims to improve nutrition outcomes and livelihoods in Rumphi and Dowa districts, with potential for scaling up nationwide.

“The visit yielded a wealth of knowledge that will be instrumental in scaling up similar initiatives across the country under future programmes,” Msowoya added.

The visiting team, which included officials from the World Bank, government, and COMSIP, saw firsthand the nutritious foods beneficiaries are cooking for their families, as well as the small‑scale nutrition businesses and value‑added products they are creating to boost their livelihoods.
